Cringe is a weekly newsletter about Auckland. We write about things we’re interested in.
You should expect:
News about restaurant, cafe + bars, including openings and closings.
Recommendations on what to eat, see and buy.
Curated event listings, focused on the central city + fringe suburbs.
Plus, whinges, opinions and criticism on the city and the forces shaping it.
Cringe is brought to you by a team* that all live and work in the central(ish) areas of Tāmaki Makaurau.
Our range of special interests are varied, but also largely common to urban dwellers and may therefore be recognisable to you. They include, but aren’t exclusive to: dining out, art exhibitions, local gigs, sparkling water hate, politics, natural wine, cricket, literary fiction, auctions, Chinese food, free parks, furniture, podcasts, complaints about cones, economics, book launches, and corgis.
*The team:
Jean writes half + edits all of Cringe. She used to be the Food Editor of Metro and has been writing about Auckland for most of her working life.
Simon writes half + designs all of Cringe. He was the publisher and art director of Metro from 2020-2024.
Mike chips in with occasional observations, celebrations and complaints. He lived in Auckland in the 90s, went away, then returned in 2021.
